Did you see the protest in front of 101 last Sunday about the Diaoyutai ?maybe 50 people with banners, the usual

No, I didn’t see that.  I think on Sunday we mostly spent the day cleaning the house then going for a hike up the mountains.  The fact that the TT didn’t even cover it shows, I feel,  what a non issue this whole thing is for most Taiwanese.  It’s all just such petty dick measuring and derailing.  It’s not about fishing rights or sovereignty, its about all the oil and gas down there and who gets to sell the rights to it and who gets to sail their warships around the islands.

Ohhh that would be terrifying to watch

There would certainly be fatalities so the riders and their sponsors would have to pay large insurance up front not to mention covering damage to houses / infrastructure from crashing bikes.  You’d also have to remove any cat’s eyes from the center of the road and rebed them on the sides.  It would also be an adrenaline rush for the helicopter pilots to provide full coverage through the mountains.

alectointhunderland replied to your post: How Times Change

I refuse to like this. Speaking of, my class last night was with a former head of the MOFA researh division, who is firmly convinced that China will only attack if Taiwan declares independence, which will NOT happen. Interesting, I thought.

What I find interesting about that position is that it has a nice circular logic that gives a person a warm fuzzy security: China will only attack if Taiwan declares independence. If enough people believe that then they will dare not even consider the idea of independence and as a result the likelihood of China attacking reduces.  What this argument requires however is wilful suspension of taking into account the physical and political reality of Taiwan’s current existing and working independence, be it under the name of ROC.  Oh no they say, the ROC is independent, not Taiwan, because Taiwan is an area of China which is one country ruled by two governments under different names.  And the word / history games begin …

The ‘refuse to like’ was because you felt it weird to ‘heart’ depressing news I assume? Or there’s something wrong with my analysis … um

alectointhunderland replied to your post: Whose Fault Is It Anyway?

Was reading about this in the paper this morning (in Chinese! It was hard!heh). No way can we survive without AC though…ack.

Well, I might have been a bit optimistic about that goal! :) And I never said this before but I really admire your ability to read the Chinese language papers.  You’ve put the hard work in in learning the language and you get to have much more insight as a result so kudos to you.  There are days I wish I could read and write instead of just speak the language and then there are other days when I thank goodness I am ‘protected’ from having to daily witness how messed up media is in Taiwan. (Not that it’s any better in the UK).

But seriously, get ready for some shocking bill hikes though …

Wanna beat them up? I’m in that kind of mood!

Lol. Actually later I regretted posting that. The tone of it sounded like I was seeking affirmation and recognition from Tumblr - way too egocentric and needy.  After all, it’s not a competition.  I respect that some people have monetised their tumblrs or made careers off the back of their writing and reporting on this media but that’s not my motivation.  I really don’t want to become the kind of person who cares more about how many followers I have and how much my material is getting attention over valuing and investing in the content and issues I blog.  In retrospect, that post smacked of the former.

That said, someone is up for a bruising by the sounds of it! Do tell :)

Jesus, I know a lot of the profs at NCCU are KMT lovers, but that’s absolutely nuts.

Then again, what can one expect from the KMT’s self named ‘Political University’ ? - it was, and to some extent remains, in both China and Taiwan a key educational facility for producing the next generation of KMT leadership and civl service / government managers.

Might be hard to stop their kid from playing bball though, since ALL the dudes I know in Taiwan play :P

Which is why it blows my mind how the Government and schools consistently fail to take this opportunity.  I swear the lack of imagination in this nation literally kills millions of dreams and natural talents every year.  Ok. Rant over.

About

Letters from Taiwan is an online diary of what engages and interests me about Taiwan as well as a record of my journeys and discoveries in the region. It is an extended letter of admiration and gratitude to this beautiful country that has so hospitably been my home for over a decade.

Originally from the UK, I arrived in 2000 as a teacher and now work full time as a professional in the field of medical devices.

This blog does take an active, passionate and often partisan interest in Taiwan's current affairs, with particular emphasis on its history, politics and economy. I believe that Taiwan is geographically and politically situated at an important juncture of global hegemonic struggle.

The very identity of the nation and the peoples living here, and the ongoing contest over the definition and meaning of those identities is a field study in contemporary nationalism and nation building. It is because this contest is far from resolved that I find the word 'contingent' the most suitable current descriptor.
